LETTER: Full of cake and coffee shops

Walking around today in the centre of Eastbourne I found it sad to see classic, well-known (and well-liked) shops such as Gecko and others closing their doors for trading.

Losing independent shops like these is surely a cause for concern. In some ways I dread to think what will replace them.

Could it possibly be another café/eatery perhaps? I’m all for free enterprise, don’t get me wrong, but personally feel we are becoming a town full of cake and coffee shops.

I do wonder also what is going to take the place of BHS in the Arndale Centre. Is it just a matter of the major chains with all the money and legal teams taking over such places now? It certainly looks to me as though the days of the individual/boutique type shopping experience are numbered in our town, and I feel that the local council could do more with the rates for such shops, protecting them in some way from unreasonable price hikes for the good of Eastbourne.
