Monday, London Victoria, 7pm. No trains going to Eastbourne. Gatwick Express cancelled. Squeeze on severely delayed Brighton train. Standing room only.
At Brighton, no info for Eastbourne trains. Got on train to Lewes. At Lewes, the train to Eastbourne posted for approximately one hour later. Oh, then it’s to be delayed too.
Negotiate with cab driver outside. Arrive home three hours after getting to Victoria – and an extra £40 lighter due to cab fare.
Reason for train chaos? Usual thing, shortage of crews due to sickness. And the England match on telly. Coincidence?
