I like and admire Eastbourne MP Caroline Ansell, but am bitterly disappointed that she has declared in favour of Brexit.
More than 40 years ago I was in the morning room of the Carlton Club when Geoffrey Rippon returned after the successful negotiation which gained our admission to Europe. That admission was hard-earned and I recall vividly the sense of hope with which I, as a young man, was then filled: a hope I retain today.
To cast aside our membership now would be a blunder, such as to rival the ill-advised Suez adventures of 60 years ago – an anniversary few will care to remember. In this dangerous world, no man is an island nor is any country. Europe needs us and we need Europe.
Together we can more confidently meet the economic and ecological challenges of our time and counter the threat of terrorism: all problems that know no frontiers. Let us show bravery, vision and just a small degree of humility and vote Remain.
As an old man of nearly 72, who wants only good for this dear country, I feel increasingly sure that this is the wisest path to follow.
