I have noted in your Letters pages that Sheikh Abid Gulzar is often the subject of very diverse views. When he first started building and expanding his businesses in the Eastbourne area he attracted much interest in your newspaper.
At first, I was a little apprehensive about his style of communicating with the public and what appeared to be a lack of understanding of local government and their responsibilities. However, since his ‘rescue’ of Eastbourne Pier, a valuable asset to the tourist industry in Eastbourne, I have changed my mind.
His intervention is a powerful incentive for Eastbourne.
He has made a similar investment in The Boship Hotel near Hailsham, the improvement in the lake and grounds is impressive.
There is much potential in both projects but they need competent, professional guidance to fulfil their objectives.
How about concerts in the grounds at The Boship, or possibly a festival that could bring writers and entertainers to the public. Look at the success of Hay on Wye. Why not here?
Mr Gulzar is a man of much enthusiasm, passion and determination, tinged with an excellent sense of humour!
He faces many challenges but we should support these ventures and enrich our tourist industry in the South East.
