LETTER: Don’t make the same mistake

I write in response to your story regarding the potential lifting of the cycling ban on Eastbourne seafront (Herald, July 10). As a regular visitor to your lovely town from York, and a victim of a cycling-friendly council, may I offer some advice based on experience – don’t do it!

My home town has the dubious title ‘Cycling Capital of the North’ (coveted only by the lycra louts). It would also, if they existed, hold titles for blatant disregard of pedestrian zones, one-way streets, traffic lights and many other rules of the road that apply to the rest of us.

The two words that appeared on your front page ‘permit’ and ‘control’ are the crux of the issue. Permitting is easy and will please some. Control, which will affect most of you, is a different problem.

Whether it’s a matter of cost or personnel I don’t know, but in York control and enforcement of cyclists is non-existent. Don’t fall for the ‘it works well in Europe’ argument. So do long licencing hours.

Heaven help those not on a bike if you go ahead.
