Since February 2015, Polegate level crossing has been activated by approaching trains. Whilst the Regional Operations Centre at Three Bridges can monitor trains, they do not normally control the barrier movements at Polegate.
From the first yellow light to the first barrier movement is only eight seconds.
The slow moving walkers can not get over the crossing in this time. I have observed some users taking up to 36 seconds to cross.
The scanning system incorporated into the management system will not allow the train to approach and anyone trapped will be released when two of the barriers are raised. I see people panic at the prospect of being trapped on the crossing. A few more seconds is required from lights to barrier movement.
