Thank you Annemarie Field for bringing to the public attention the crass views of Eastbourne Borough Council’s Planning Committee regarding the uPVC windows at the East Beach Hotel [Herald, November 27].
I have lived in Eastbourne all my life and am well aware of the difficulties the seafront hotels have because of the close proximity to the sea and its harmful salt spray.
The hotel owners have decided and/or been advised that the best solution to deal with the prevailing conditions is to replace the continually rotting wooden frames of the ground floor windows with uPVC which will not rot or need repairs; this has been done and the result is brilliant. The planning officers have objected. Would they have come to the same decision had they been the owners of the building? I think not. The building looks great at present and I am confident that the current owners will keep it that way.
