Eastbourne Choral Society again excelled itself, giving a wonderful performance of this lovely work. It was sung with sensitivity, showing the contrast in verse, shade and light, plus attack, joy, and plaintive call in “Hades where is thy Sting?” The sopranos held and sustained challenging high notes, tenors soared, and the bass plus altos were perfectly balanced, securing a firm foundation. It was also rewarding for the choir not to be drowned by an over zealous orchestra! The soloist Sofia Larsson had a wonderful voice, singing with strength and ease, and baritone Ed Ballard complemented this with an equally expressive voice and clear diction. Conductor John Hancorn summed up, as always, the sheer beauty and emotion, coaxed, seemingly with ease, from his choir.
