Michael Harris’s letter [Herald, November 27] criticises Abid Gulzar’s idea to bring large boats to the end of the pier. I don’t know how long Mr Harris has lived in the town but I have lived here all of my life. When I was a young lad (in the 1950s) I remember going to the end of the pier, boarding a paddle steamer and going to the Isle of Wight for the day, returning later in the day on the same boat. I believe it was named the Waverley – look it up on Google.
So what about the sandbank area Mr Harris mentioned, did it not exist then, has it grown since? I don’t think Mr Gulzar is contemplating cruise liners here but I guess something a little smaller that managed perfectly OK in the past. Perhaps not such a silly idea.
