Health and safety staff not ‘Gestapo’

I must register my disappointment that a responsible and caring member of our community [AM Rotary president Martin Wellings, Herald letters, September 30] should choose to describe health and safety workers as Gestapo.

Having spent all my working life safeguarding the lives of others, formerly in the fire service and now as a health and safety consultant, I know I have contributed positively to people’s safety.

My father died as a result of the lack of health and safety in the workplace in the 1960s and 1970s and I would not want to see a return to those days.

I do hope the comments made by Mr Wellings were tongue in cheek, even so they were still insensitive and thoughtless.
