WITH regards to the new proposals for developing the Arndale Centre, I’m sure this would help improve the town centre greatly, but in order to help attract and encourage people to shop even more, you need to drop the car parking charges.
Where is the incentive to shop in town when you can go elsewhere and shop for free?
It was a scheme that was unpopular at the time and remains so. How many empty shops in the town could attribute their demise to a lack of shoppers going elsewhere attracted by free parking.
In a period of difficult trading and uncertainty, parking charges are the last thing you want, and do little to ease the situation not only with regards to shopping but tourism also.
As usual the bureaucrats think they know best and as usual get it wrong, talk to any retailer in the town about parking charges.
