SUPERFICIALLY, bus lanes are a good idea, but only if roads are wide enough.
Regretfully the roads in Eastbourne are too narrow to allow exclusive lanes to be marked out.
There may be the odd hundred yards or so, here and there, but not a sufficiently long run to justify the inconvenience to other traffic.
Where shops are involved, the exclusion of kerb side parking will seriously affect their businesses.
Short bus lanes only lead to congestion when the buses attempt to join the main stream of traffic.
If it is the intention to widen roads to accommodate bus lanes the expense will be considerable.
In these financially straightened times, top priority should be given to repairing road surfaces and filling in pot-holes.
