Crime merits severe punishment

AS A life-long pedestrian, I’m always concerned about going out after dark.

If you have wandered around town after a show or film you’ll know what I mean.

That three young visitors to Eastbourne were attacked at knifepoint (Herald, November 11) and robbed just down the road doesn’t do much to allay my fear.

A premeditated attack with a knife should receive a severe punishment if these people are ever caught.

I only hope that no other visitors meet up with them.

I realise police patrols can’t be everywhere so it might be necessary to issue students with portable attack alarms.

CCTV doesn’t allay my fears either and to my mind it doesn’t deter would-be perpetrators of crime.

It only helps to catch offenders - but after the evil act has already taken place.
