I WANT to add to the robust defence of the Towner in last week’s letters, by urging anyone who doubts the value of Eastbourne’s art gallery to visit the current exhibition of John Piper in Kent and Sussex.
The show includes fine examples of Piper’s work throughout his career, so offers an opportunity to observe an artist’s development.
Piper explored many avenues and was clearly influenced by other painters, before achieving his own distinctive style.
He worked in various media, always bringing something original to the subjects he tackled.
Just compare his Seaford Head with more familiar versions of that stretch of our coastline.
The show includes a fascinating short film in which Piper describes his approach to painting and is on until September 25. Don’t miss it.
