Bikeability charges down to council

DAVID Ellis and Martin Hillman (Gazette letters, May 18) blame the government for unwelcome changes to the Bikeability arrangements in East Sussex.

As the relevant transport minister in the Department for Transport, I wish to make it clear that the government regards Bikeability as both very worthwhile and important, that funding has been guaranteed for the entirety of the four-year spending review period, and I have allocated £11m this year alone to the scheme.

There have been no centrally-imposed cuts to Bikeability.

Your correspondents need to take up the issue of charges with those who have imposed them, namely East Sussex County Council.
