Apprenticeships: enormous credit where due

I AM no great political fan of our MP, but surely enormous credit where it is due.

Stephen Lloyd is performing a splendid service in attempting to increase apprenticeships in the town.

For too long the emphasis has been on cramming as many youngsters into university as possible, apparently regardless of whether they are suited to the discipline or not, regardless too of whether or not we need graduates in golf club management or red carpet interviewing.

The drop-out rate each year speaks volumes as to the lunacy of the approach.

Now at last one of our parliamentary representatives is trying to redress the balance and provide for the sort of occupations that clearly are relevant to some youngsters and whose services are truly needed in the community.

On this one, Stephen, all power to you.
