Woman sexually assaulted in Eastbourne park

Police are hunting a man who sexually assaulted a woman who had been exercising in a park.

The 27-year-old was walking in Archery recreation ground when she was grabbed from behind by a man and assaulted.

She struggled free from his grasp and kicked him in the groin before running towards Lottbridge Drive and escaping.

The incident began shortly before 2.30pm on Wednesday July 3 when the woman went to Archery Recreation Ground in Eastbourne to use the outdoor exercise machines.

A man approached her, asked her for the time and tried to start a conversation but she ignored him and he walked off.

After a few minutes she left the machines and was walking towards Lottbridge Drive, near to the community centre, when the man attacked her.

The attacker was 5’ 9” and of medium build. He had short dark spiky hair and was tanned and clean shaven.

He was wearing black or dark overalls covered in paint spots and black boots. He spoke with a local accent.

His victim was wearing denim jeans and a grey top.

Detective Inspector Gavin Patch, of East Sussex CID, said, “This was a brazen attack in the middle of the day and could have been much worse for the victim if she had not bravely fought back against her attacker.

“We are looking at CCTV footage recorded in the area to try to identify the man and are keen to speak to anyone who may recognise his description or may have seen part of all the attack taking place.

“Did you see the woman going to the exercise machines or a man approaching or following her?

“We urgently need the public’s help so that we can catch this man.”

Anyone with information should call 101 quoting serial 1338 of July 3.
