Police have named a 32-year-old London man they want to question following a serious assault on a woman in Eastbourne at the weekend.

Devon Newell, who is known as “D”, is wanted for interview by police after the assault on a woman in her flat in Viking Way, on the Kingsmere Estate where the woman sustained serious facial and body injuries.

The incident happened on Saturday morning (October 13) when police say the woman was punched and kicked.

Newell is from the Peckham area of South London, but has connections to Eastbourne. The Metropolitan Police is also helping in the search for him.

He is described as black, 6feet tall, slim build, with cropped hair and a goatee beard. He was last seen wearing a dark purple Berghaus rain mac, light blue denim trousers with a red start on one of the buttocks, with possibly the letter A in the middle of the star. Newell was also wearing a pair of blue and light blue Nike Air Max trainers.

Detective Sergeant Lloyd Lewis, of the East Sussex Adult Protection Team said; “This was a nasty attack which resulted in the 20-year old victim, who lives at the address, sustaining serious facial and body injuries consistent with having been punched and kicked, and we are treating it as a case of grievous bodily harm. She was treated at Eastbourne District General Hospital and released the following day.

“It is important that Newell is found as soon as possible and I would urge anyone who has information as to his whereabouts to contact Sussex Police on 101 quoting serial 0499 of 13/10, or by contacting Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

“We are also keen to hear from anyone who was in the vicinity of Viking Way at around 10am on Saturday, October 13, and who may have seen Devon. We believe that he may have left the area in a dark coloured car, possibly an Audi A4.”
