A 25-YEAR-OLD woman has been jailed for attacking a man in the town centre.
Lianne Carson was sentenced to 12 weeks behind bars on Tuesday this week following chaotic scenes at Eastbourne Magistrates Court during which she collapsed in the dock.
The defendant had been with a friend when they approached the victim on May 26.
Carson’s friend demanded a cigarette, the man pushed him away and Carson then hit him round the head,
The Kingston Road resident pleaded guilty to common assault at an earlier hearing and the case was adjourned until Tuesday (July 4) for her to be sentenced.
Justin Rivett, defending, told magistrates his client had a long-standing alcohol problem and asked them to sentence her to an order where she could get support for her problems.
He addressed the court in Carson’s absence, before she turned up half-way through the case, saying in the past she had completed a successful detox, been to AA meetings and Action for Change.
He added, “She’s been attacked recently. She is clearly confused and upset and going through a difficult time. She needs the help and support of probation service to get her in a position where she is less likely to offend again.
“There might be question marks about her motivation and compliance, I ask you to give her the benefit of the doubt at this stage.”
Magistrates had to adjourn sentencing for around 15 minutes after Carson collapsed in the dock.
After regaining her composure she returned to the court. The chairman of the bench said prison was the only sentencing options because the attack was unprovoked and committed while she was under the influence of alcohol.
