WOMEN’S WORLD DAY OF PRAYER: This year the service has been written by the women of Cuba. The theme from St Mark’s Gospel is ‘receive children, receive me’ - a reminder that everyone is a child of God and equally worthy of His love and respect. The service is relayed at churches throughout to-day Friday March 4. At St Mary’s Church in Willingdon the service will be held at 10.30am, and at St Wilfrid’s Church in Broad Road Willingdon it will be held at 2.30am. Men are also very welcome at these services.

WILLINGDON FLOWER CLUB: will be meeting at 1.45pm for a 2pm start at Willingdon Memorial Hall in Church Street to-day Friday March 4 for their AGM. The competition is entitled ‘crowning glory’. MESSY CHURCH: at St Mary’s Church Willingdon will be held from 3pm to 5.30pm on Saturday March 5 in St Mary’s Church Hall and everyone is welcome to come along and join in the bible themed craft activities, followed by family worship and singing in the church from 4.30pm to 4.50pm and then back to the hall for something to eat. LOVE ACTION: will be entertaining customers at the British Queen at Willingdon Triangle at 8.30pm on Saturday March 5. The British Queen’s monthly community coffee mornings are on the second Thursday of the month. The next one is on March 10 when you can order tea/coffee and a cake for just £1.50.

ST PIRAN’S DAY: On Saturday March 5 The Wheatsheaf is celebrating St Piran’s Day with all things Cornish – a table quiz, Cornish pasties, pirates and Cornish ales, such as Betty Stogs. Felix the Pirate and his good pal Trevelyan will lead the revellers in a lively Gilbert and Sullivan sing-along. Wave the black and white flag, dig out your cutlass and eye-patch, polish up your doubloons, dust off your parrot, and go along and sing a few shanties. Keep your eyes peeled for the fabled Cornish knocker. Cornish pasties will be available all day but the main entertainment starts about 8pm. There will be a cask of Cornish beer at just £1.95 a pint. This is part of a wider charity event for RNLI.

SPONSORED WALK: Myeloma is a bone marrow cancer. Willingdon resident Robin Curtis supports the charity Myeloma UK as a close friend died of the disease in October 2015 after a seven and a half year battle to fight it. To raise funds for the charity Robin is taking part in a sponsored 23 mile walk from Polegate to Brighton on Saturday March 5. He will be returning to Polegate by train and is hoping to be in time to visit the Wheatsheaf for part of St Piran’s day.

ASTRONOMY: Eastbourne Astronomical Society will be meeting from 7.30pm to 10pm on Saturday March 5 at Willingdon Memorial Hall in Church Street. The speaker is Bob Argyle and his subject is entitled ‘visual double star astronomy’.

MEETINGS: Willingdon and Jevington Parish Council will be holding a planning meeting at 7pm on Monday March 7 followed by a recreation meeting at 7.30pm at Willingdon Community School in Broad Road. Please ring 01323 489603 for further information. Meetings are open to the public.

WILLINGDON NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH: will be meeting at 2.30pm on Monday March 7 in the vestry at Trinity Church in Coppice Avenue Willingdon. A TASTE OF SUNRISE: Sunrise Senior Living at 6 Upper Kings Drive Willingdon is hosting a seaside themed culinary event from 2.30pm to 4pm on Wednesday March 9. You are invited to sample the delicious home-cooked seafood and pick up a free recipe book. You can also have a tour of the community. TEA PARTY: Jevington & Filching WI will be meeting at 2pm on Thursday March 10 in Trinity Church Hall Coppice Avenue Willingdon. The members will be enjoying a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party and quiz. The competition is a decorated hard-boiled egg.

WILLINGDON WI: will be meeting at 2.15pm on Thursday March 10 at Willingdon Memorial Hall in Church Street. The speaker is John Henty and his subject is Spike Milligan.

RACE NIGHT: Friends of Willingdon Community School are organising a race night for Friday March 11 at Willingdon School in Broad Road. Doors open at 6.15pm and the first race starts at 7pm. There is a bar available. Food options are £5 each and this includes entry to the race night. The choices of menu are fish and chips, two sausages and chips, or two vegie sausages and chips. Tickets for the race night and food choice must be booked in advance. Cheques should be paid out to F.O.W.S. Cheques or a cash payment should be handed in to reception by Wednesday March 9. THE GROWERS GROUP: will be meeting from 6.30pm to 8.30pm on Thursday March 10 at the Red Lion in Willingdon Village. Evenings are very informal and friendly and on this occasion members are invited to bring along any unwanted seeds or plants they may have so that they can be swopped or given away. There is then a discussion on the various plants, and suggestions about what needs to be done in the garden this month, and then there are the amusing words of wisdom from John Shackock.

PFPA: The Annual General Meeting of the Paragon Fields Preservation Association will be held at 7pm on Friday March 11 at Wannock Village Hall. If you would like to nominate someone to join the committee, nominations should be in by March 10 although in the absence of written nominations the chairperson may invite and accept nominations on the night. PFPA was formed in 1992. Paragon Fields are at the foot of the Downs, near Wannock Lane and were purchased by local residents and other well-wishers in order that the land should never be built on but should be preserved as an open space for the quiet enjoyment of the general public and for the protection and encouragement of the local flora and fauna. The preservation association maintains the fields and surrounding hedges and members pay an annual membership fee of just £5 - but do go along to the meeting and find out more.

TABLE SALE: The JPK Sussex Project is holding a table sale from 10am to 2pm on Saturday March 12 in conjunction with Eastbourne Sovereign Rotary Club. It will be held at The JPK Sussex Project, 39 - 41 Church Street Old Town BN21 1HP (the building previously owned by Edgmond Evangelical Church). Refreshments will be available. JPK was formed to provide a supported living centre for people with a learning disability alongside meaningful daytime activities. Tables can be booked for £10 each.
