Wildlife rescuers free scared swan

A wildlife charity is asking the public to be careful about what they throw away after rescuing a swan in Eastbourne this afternoon (February 23).

East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service (WRAS) was called to Princes Park after members of the public spotted a young swan tangled in discarded ropes.

Rescuers were able to lure the bird onto land before freeing it from the rope and checking it for injuries.

“The swan was young, probably only one- or two-years-old, and had about five metres of rope entangled round its neck and trailing in the water behind. The bird was clearly agitated,” said WRAS rescuer Trevor Weeks.

“This again highlights the need for people to tidy away waste of all types. We have had so many different creatures being caught in a wide variety of objects. they include a fox cub with a plastic tub stuck on its head, a hedgehog with plastic beer can holder wrapped round its body and a duck with a plastic bottle top round its beak.

“So yet again we are pleading with people to tidy up after themselves and ensure nothing is left where wildlife or domestic pets can get caught as they may not be as lucky as this swan.”
