VIDEO: Eastbourne tennis ace is star of new film on Devonshire Park improvements

The on-form British number one, who recently reached the quarter finals of the Australian Open only to lose against Serena Williams, said she is excited about the major improvements to tennis courts and facilities as well as the extensive theatre restorations and creation of an international conference centre.

She said, “Eastbourne is my home. I love it here. When I’m not competing it’s where I relax and have time with friends and family.

“When I first started playing at Devonshire Park as a young teenager, I could only dream of winning tournaments and climbing the world rankings.

“The first time I stepped out on court here in Eastbourne, at the Aegon International tournament, it was a very special moment for me. One I won’t ever forget.

“I’m very lucky to have these courts on my doorstep, so I’m really excited that Eastbourne Borough Council and the Lawn Tennis Association are working together to enhance the already fantastic playing facilities.

“The tennis improvements are one part of a £44million council investment that will transform Devonshire Quarter into a first class cultural, conferencing and sporting venue.

“Whether you enjoy tennis, the theatre or want to have a great conference, this is the place to be.”

Just over three minutes long, the film includes interviews with Eastbourne council leader David Tutt, Chris Jordan, artistic director at Eastbourne Theatres and Jason Griffiths, regional director of Vinci Construction.

Councillor Tutt said, “Jo Konta is a world top ten tennis player, British number one and in the view of many, including me, a hot prospect to win her first major in 2017.

“She is very proud of her home in Eastbourne and excited about the transformation being undertaken across Devonshire Park.

“We are creating something very special and it is terrific to have one of the best female tennis players on the planet living locally and helping to share our great news.”

The film, produced by Eastbourne firm Smokecreen Visuals, shows a 3D walk-through and a full set of architect’s images showing how each aspect of the Devonshire Quarter will look when the £44million project is completed, by 2020.
