They say that at around 12.40pm police were told two men of Asian appearance had been seen to climb out of a canvas-sided van in High Street, Westham, and make their way separately on foot towards nearby Rattle Road.

Officers attended and two 27-year-olds, one from Iran and one from Afghanistan, were arrested on suspicion of illegally entering the UK.

Both are currently in police custody awaiting transfer to an immigration holding centre.

The van was traced to Santos Wharf, Eastbourne, where its driver, a 45-year-old Polish man, was arrested on suspicion of assisting illegal entry. He was later released without charge.

The Sussex Police helicopter was also involved in the search for the two men.
