A four-hour manhunt across the South Downs and Friston Forest has come to an end.

Police have stood down without making an arrest after a cross country pursuit just outside Eastbourne.

The helicopter and ground-based units were hunting the wanted man from 11am this morning (Thursday, July 14).

The wanted man was spotted in a car near Hailsham and police said they had contained him in woodland near Westdean after he evaded police by heading cross-country in his 4x4.

The man was located in a pre-planned police operation by officers investigating a series of burglaries in the county.

A National Police Air Service helicopter supported the operation and was seen over Eastbourne, Hailsham and Battle areas and the South Downs in the area of Friston Forest.

At 11.08am a silver 4x4 was spotted near Hailsham and pursuit was authorised. The vehicle headed along the B2104 and on to the A22. It then turned west on to the A27 towards Lewes, but left the A27 near Folkington before crashing through a fence and heading cross country up on to the Downs.

It smashed through a number of fences and gates before coming to a halt in woodland north of Westdean, where it became stuck. The man ran into woodland, where he was being sought by the helicopter and ground-based units just after noon.

This afternoon a police spokesperson said, “The search was stood down just after 3pm. The man is known to police and further enquiries are being made to locate him.”
