Unemployment falling in Eastbourne

Fewer people in Eastbourne are claiming than this time last year as national unemployment falls to the lowest for nearly 10 years – according to new official figures.

The figures – released today (December 16) by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) – show the unemployment rate fell to 5.2 per cent in the three months to October which is the lowest jobless rate since the three-month period to January 2006.

Unemployment also fell in the South East during this period with 40,000 fewer people considered jobless than the previous year.

Employment rates in the same period grew by 75,000, seeing more than 4.46 million in work in the South East.

Job Centre Plus manager Bruce Campbell welcomed the latest ONS figures. He said, “It is very good news. In Eastbourne there are 160 fewer people claiming than this time last year, which represents a 13 per cent drop. In Wealden District there are 75 fewer people claiming than this time last year, which represents a 12 per cent drop.

“We are really pleased with the latest figures, we’ve run a series of recruitment campaigns to help local people getting employment by working with local companies.

“I would say to local employers, who are looking to recruit in the new year, the Job Centre Plus can help. We run a series of work trials and other advice, which is available on our website.”

While more people were in work than this time last year, rises in worker’s pay has slowed significantly.

Total pay grew by 2.4 per cent nationally falling short of the three per cent rise the Bank of England say would be required to raise interest rates.
