Two new primary schools for Eastbourne?

Plans have been unveiled this week for two new primary schools for Eastbourne.

If given the go ahead, one will go on the Cavendish School site and open in September 2015 and at Ratton too.

County council education bosses say there is a desperate shortage of primary school places in the town and rather than expand St Andrew’s Infant and Tollgate Community Junior schools, they want to see primary school places at Cavendish in Eldon Road and at Ratton in Park Avenue.

A decision will be made at a county council meeting on Monday.

It was originally agreed in December that a proposal to permanently enlarge St Andrew’s and Tollgate be given the go ahead to provide an additional 210 primary school places in the central south part of Eastbourne.

But after concerns from St Andrew’s governors, education officials starting looking at alternative plans and they are a new two form entry primary school at Cavendish and a new primary school at Ratton.

A council spokesperson said, “The council has a duty to ensure the provision of sufficient school places in Eastbourne to meet demand in the foreseeable future.

“The headteacher and governors at Cavendish School have indicated their support of the proposal to establish a new school on their site.

“The options appraisal for a new primary school on Ratton’s site is currently underway. The acting headteacher and governors of Ratton School Academy Trust have indicated they too are supportive of the proposal.”
