Two bodies were found at cliffs between Cuckmere and Beachy Head after clothes were found by concerned walkers.

Newhaven’s Severn Class Lifeboat RNLB David and Elizabeth Acland was launched to assist Solent Coastguard’s land based team in the search for a possible body from the shoreline after reports of clothes found by the edge of the cliff.

The lifeboat was quickly at the scene on Tuesday (September 10) afternoon and began searching the isolated beaches and the waterline. The team launched its small inflatable boat because of the shallow water and the HM Coastguard search team and a rescue helicopter joined both boats in its search.

The helicopter from Lee-on-Solent known as ‘Rescue 104’ identified a possible body close to Haven Brow near the Cuckmere. The inflatable boat recovered the casualty back to the lifeboat and while on route back to the lifeboat station Rescue 104 then identified another casualty at the base of the cliffs between Cuckmere and Beachy Head.

Both bodies were passed into the care of the coroner’s officers.

Second Coxswain Lee Blacknell said, “These launches are always difficult for our crew and we treat the casualties with dignity and respect.

“Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the persons recovered.”
