THE TRUST which runs Eastbourne District General Hospital has committed to improving its breastfeeding services.

United Nation’s Children Fund awarded a certificate to the East Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust (ESHT), which oversees the DGH and Conquest Hospital in Hastings, recognising maternity services’ commitment to best practice and standards as part of UNICEF’s Baby Friendly Initiative. Jayne Collins, infant feeding specialist midwife for the trust, said, “Breastfeeding protects babies against a wide range of serious illnesses in infancy as well as allergies and diabetes in childhood. We also know that breastfeeding reduces the mother’s risk of some cancers and it is easier, cheaper and simply less hassle than bottle feeding.”
