Tribute to popular Eastbourne golfer

Alan was honorary secretary, captain and as a committee member for nearly all of his 18 years’ membership.

He served in the RAF for 31 years as a navigator and achieved the rank of flight lieutenant. He first flew fixed wing prop and jet aircraft and converted to rotary in 1978.

Alan was involved in ferrying members of the SAS between Hereford and London before and after they stormed the Iranian Embassy.

He was operational in the first Gulf war, Desert Storm and saw action in Belize and Northern Ireland.

His last operational flying involved ferrying dignitaries to and from the Normandy Beaches for the 50th anniversary and his family say he was very proud to have been part of that operation.

A Lottbridge Golf Club spokesperson said, “Typically of the man, Alan very seldom spoke of his service life and we are indebted to one of his children Nick, for the information.

“Our thoughts are with his family Cath, Andrew and Nick. Alan George Stevenson, we will never forget you.”
