The main road in Alfriston is closed this afternoon (Thursday, January 7) due to flooding.
Alfriston Road and North Street are blocked in both directions around the Long Bridge junction due to overflowing water.
Wealden District Councillor Philip Ede took to social media to warn residents and post photos of the high river levels (pictured). He said: “Flooding looking a bit critical around Alfriston given that it’s only low tide right now.
“I’ve chatted to some residents in River Lane who are closest and I’ve rung the Environment Agency and asked them to inspect with a view to deploying sandbags before high tide this evening.”
A flood warning remains in place for the Cuckmere River. The Environment Agency said: “Overnight we have seen 20mm of rainfall in some parts of the catchment, meaning river levels have risen very quickly on all parts of the Cuckmere.
“Conditions are very wet and there is likely to be some localised disruption on some roads as a result of this.
“There is no further heavy rainfall expected throughout the afternoon and evening and this should allow time for the river to peak and for levels to start dropping.
“Friday generally looks to be a dry day too, helping levels to drop further ahead of predicted rainfall on Saturday.”
