Emergency services including the air ambulance and fire crews from Burgess Hill, Barcombe and Preston Circus were called to Bostall Road at 2.40am to reports the car had rolled down the steep bank towards Westmeston.

The SECAmb spokesperson said the black Audi A3 rolled down an 80 degree incline and was located about 100m from the highway.

The spokesperson said: “We responded with three cars and an ambulance as it was difficult to locate.

“Because of the difficulties on scene our HART (Hazardous Area Response Team) also responded as specialist equipment was required to reach the patient down the steep incline.

“A specialist HART 4x4 managed to extract the patient to an ambulance which then met up with the HEMs car. The ambulance then took the woman to Royal Sussex County Hospital.”

She was conscious at the scene but had suffered multiple injuries.

Firefighters left the scene at about 5.25am.

The road was closed for investigations into the crash. It reopened at around 9.10am, but was temporarily closed again at 10am to allow for recovery of the car.
