Southern Rail reported the incident on Twitter on Sunday (August 2) at around 6.40pm.

A Southern spokesperson said, “Due to a fault with barriers at a level crossing at Polegate the line is closed. No trains are able to run from Polegate in the direction of Lewes until further notice.”

The rail company later tweeted at around 7.45pm saying services were up and running again, but will be delayed.

Southern said the disruption completely ended at around 8pm.

However, some travellers reported there were delays this morning (Monday, August 3) which were suggested to be because of the barriers, but Southern were unable to confirm this.

Travellers who were delayed by 15 minutes or more can claim compensation from SR here http://southernrailway.com/delayrepay
