South East Water has been renewing lead pipes to properties in Motcombe Lane this week and work is due to be completed on Thursday (March 5).

The same area was recently dug up in November last year as SGN did work on an 80-year-old gas pipe.

A huge trench ran along the side of the road from the start of Motcombe Lane, by Community Wise, to Motcombe Swimming Pool - screened off by plastic barriers and metal fencing and four-way traffic lights were operating along the busy route, which cuts through the heart of Motcombe.

South East Water was also called in on December 17 after a water pipe was damaged, briefly cutting off water to local homes.

The water company’s distribution manager Andrew Davin said, “We’re currently working to replace a number of communication pipes connected to customer properties in Motcombe Lane, Eastbourne.

“Our team was called to repair one of the pipes at the end of last year after it was damaged during third party utility work.

“During the repair it was noted the communication pipes – the small pipes that connect customers properties to our water main – were made of lead. We’re now taking the opportunity to upgrade them to new plastic pipes.

“We’re sorry for any inconvenience this work may cause and we’re working as quickly as possible to complete it.”
