South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) said a critical care paramedic was also sent to help treat the man.

“The patient was taken to the Royal Sussex County hospital in Brighton in an extremely serious condition,” a SECAmb spokesman said.

Sussex Police also attended the incident.

Police said he was responding to treatment last night and that he was expected to be discharged from hospital later this afternoon.

Rob Ballantine, director of SJM which is organising the festival, said: “We are very pleased with the response of the medical team - we wish them a very speedy recovery”
