Police said officers received reports at around 5.45pm of a man who was in a ‘drunken state’ walking along the side of the A284 Lyminster Road in Lyminster, near Littlehampton.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said the incident was downgraded from an emergency due to officers being ‘heavily committed’ to other incidents in the area.

The man was later involved in a collision with a car along the road, the spokesman added.

He died at the scene.

Police said: “Sadly officers were unable to reach the scene before the collision occurred.

“As a result of this the incident is being referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission for its assessment.”
