THE REDOUBT Fortress is inviting budding stargazers to join the Star Party – and have the chance to see Venus up close - this weekend with a free evening event from 5pm-8pm on Saturday.
Eastbourne Astronomical Society is working with the Redoubt to host its first Star Party of 2012 with visitors invited to use a selection of telescopes to view the night sky from the unique setting of the Redoubt’s gun platform.
The planet Venus is expected to be the most prominent star in the sky on Saturday night, while Jupiter and its moons should also be visible as well as a thin crescent moon with shine from the earth illuminating its darkest portion.
Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for Tourism and Leisure Cllr Neil Stanley said, “We are delighted to continue working with Eastbourne Astronomical Society in 2012 and staging these fascinating star gazing events at our historic seafront landmark.
“The Star Parties always attract a range of visitors of all ages and it’s a great opportunity to enjoy using excellent telescopic equipment while learning about the universe around us.”
This Saturday, Star Party visitors will also have the chance to hear from expert Peter Gill who will give a presentation on the basics of astronomy in a casemate below the gun platform and visitors are being encouraged to come with questions they might like to ask on the night.
With both Venus and Jupiter expected to be visible on Saturday night, star gazers should also see Saturn rising.
