An Eastbourne dentist became even more determined to complete a 100 mile charity bike ride after having his bike stolen just hours beforehand.

Toby Edwards-Lunn, a dentist at West Terrace Dental Practice, covered the gruelling Prudential Ride London-Surrey 100 in just seven hours on August 4 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

But, Toby’s fundraising challenge was almost scuppered when his road bike was stolen in Greenwich just hours before the race started. He very nearly didn’t make it and made the start line with just seconds to spare.

Toby told the Gazette, “The ride starts very early in the morning and participants are required to register the day before. This meant that I stayed overnight in Greenwich the night before the event and I awoke at 5.30am to discover that my bike had been pinched from outside my accommodation.

“Fortunately, the friend I was staying with had a top-of-the-range road bike that I managed to borrow and set up, only making it to the start line with seconds to spare.

“I was determined to raise essential funds for Macmillan and this made me even more committed to reach the finish line.”

Spurred on by the support and promised sponsorship from friends, family and patients at the practice, his efforts have raised more than £1,000 for Macmillan.

Toby said, “The Prudential Ride London 100 is known as one of the toughest of its kind, but completing it and raising more than £1,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support feels like a fantastic achievement.

“I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who sponsored me.”
