AN EAST Dean resident will be scaling Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds in memory of a neighbour who died.

Tina Woodley-Roberts, 42, will pair up with a friend for the feat which will be in aid of Pancreatic Cancer.

Mrs Woodley-Roberts’ neighbour Jane Delaney died of the disease in October last year, three months after she was diagnosed.

Now 42-year-old Mrs Woodley-Roberts and a pal are setting up a series of fundraising events – one of which will be supported by local resident and set designer John Napier – to boost the charity coffers before the duo head off to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in July.

Mrs Woodley-Roberts, who lives in Michel Dene Road, said, “It was so quick and that’s why we want to do all these fundraising events.

“We wanted to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer UK because it’s one that has the least amount of funding out of all the cancers.”

The first event will be an Auction of Promises, with some West End glitz, at the village hall on Saturday March 3.

The event costs £15 and includes a ploughmans lunch and Mr Napier will also be giving a talk on his work as the recognised top set designer for Broadway and London theatrical performances.

Mr Napier has worked with an array of global talent including Sir Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Michael Jackson.

This will be followed by a talk from gardening expert and Daily Telegraph columnist Helen Yemm for a question and answer session on March 10. A wine tasting event and quiz night will also form part of the fun in April and June and the pair are also looking for support from businesses for a golf day they plan to hold on Friday May 11.

Several businesses have already come forward to back the friends, who have so far raised around £5,000 for the cause.

Speaking of her neighbour Jane, Tina said, “She was good fun. She was really part of the community and got involved with playing bowls in the village and helped with fundraising for the village hall.”
