Thirsty tennis fans quaffed more than 2,000 glasses of Moet and Chandon Champagne as the Aegon International celebrated 40 years of Eastbourne tennis last week.

The warm weather also saw people queuing at the Pimm’s tent, with more than 4,000 glasses of the traditional summer cocktail consumed during the tournament.

An astounding 32,000 cups of coffee were consumed, along with 3,200 bottles of Highland Spring water.

The crowds enjoyed more than 4,400 sandwiches and around 1,040 portions of traditional fish and chips.

This year’s event saw record daily attendances on two days of the tournament – the opening Saturday, when 6,000 spectators poured through the gates at Devonshire Park, and two days later on the Monday, when the main draw got underway.

Around 4,000 fans turned up on Sunday for the Rally 4 Bally charity event. Tournament director Gavin Fletcher said, “Rally 4 Bally was very well supported. The atmosphere was relaxed and appropriate for the occasion and I think everyone involved enjoyed the experience, albeit in sad circumstances. We thank the people of Eastbourne and surrounding areas for their ongoing attendance and support of the tournament.”
