Footnotes: To Dr. Johnsons’ Great Wen, this week to see a performance by a friend in a London production. I am not a lover of these situations, being a poor front of house audience member. Most actors are.

We sit there mentally criticising every move, stage direction and character interpretation, putting ourselves in the place of the people on the stage.

However, the worst is yet to come. That is when you go back stage to the dressing room afterwards to congratulate or commiserate with the poor stiff you have come to see.

If the show is an outstanding success and the friend wonderful in the part then there is no difficulty. You gushingly tell them how much you enjoyed the whole thing etc., If, on the other hand, however, the play is a complete turkey, a flop and your friend is obviously mis-cast and consequently terrible in the role, what then? You frantically try and think of something positive to say. When I was a young actor appearing in repertory all over the country, my mother, my most loyal fan, used to try to attend a performance wherever I was. She would turn up with her lifelong friend, Dolly, and however bad the play, or me, she would always find some aspect of the performance to praise.

Once, however, she met her Waterloo in the face of a play that I was hopeless in, and that was badly written and poorly directed. Desperately trying to cast around for something good to say about the production she turned to me and said.”Dolly thought the brass bannisters in the foyer, were beautifully polished. Didn’t you Dolly”?

Enjoy your week.
