A TEENAGE girl is recovering in hospital after a crash in Seaside on Tuesday afternoon.

The 14-year-old schoolgirl was crossing the zebra crossing when she was hit by a yellow Peugeot 107.

The driver of the Peugeot, a 56-year-old woman, had stopped to allow the girl to cross but a black Mercedes, driven by an 18-year-old man, struck the back of the Peugeot pushing it into the girl on the crossing.

The collision happened at 3.40pm on the crossing just east of the junction with Southbourne Road near to the Arlington Arms pub.

The teenager was taken by ambulance to the Eastbourne District General Hospital in a critical condition and was being cared for in the Critical Care Unit.

Her condition yesterday was described as stable by a hospital spokesperson.

The road between the Tesco roundabout at Lottbridge Drove and Southbourne Road was closed for more than three hours after the accident while investigators carried out forensic examinations.

The driver of the Mercedes car was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

Officers from the Sussex Police Roads Policing Unit are continuing to investigate the collision and are appealing for witnesses to contact them on 0845 60 70 999 quoting Operation Explore.
