EASTBOURNE welcomes the Swedish Olympic tennis team this week as they arrive at their chosen south coast destination for their official Pre-2012 Games Training Camp.
The International Lawn Tennis Centre (ILTC), an official 2012 training venue and home of the prestigious AEGON International Tennis Championships, will be used by three Swedish players and their captains in the days leading up to the 2012 Games.
The team, which includes Robert Lindstedt, Sofia Arvidsson and Johan Brunström, will practise on the show courts at the ILTC in Eastbourne’s Devonshire Park as well as make use of the state-of-the-art Sports Science Centre at the University of Brighton.
Sofia Ardivsson will play the women’s singles, as well as mixed doubles event with Robert Lindstedt at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Lindstedt will also be playing the men’s doubles with Johan Brunström.
Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for Tourism and Leisure Cllr Neil Stanley said, “I am delighted to welcome the Swedish Olympic tennis team to Eastbourne to train here for the biggest sporting event this country has ever seen.
“We saw a number of well known players here in June for the AEGON International, including Andy Roddick, and so we are thrilled to host the Swedish team here in the days just before the 2012 Games.
“After the great turn out for the Olympic Torch Relay I am confident Eastbourne will give them a world class welcome.”
The Swedish tennis team visited Eastbourne in January to view the impressive training facilities available in the seaside destination, including the cutting edge fitness suite at the Eastbourne campus of the University of Brighton.
Sofia Arvidsson said, “We are looking forward to prepare for the London 2012 Olympic Games in Eastbourne. The grass courts are so good there.”
The team will be staying here for four days leading up to the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony.
