Suzuki Alto must have for the budget buyers

SMALL cars have never made more sense than they do now and all the signs point to models from the diminutive end of the motoring spectrum becoming ever more relevant in the future.

The Alto is the latest in a long line of small car efforts from Suzuki and it’s been usefully improved making it a desirable and affordable proposition.

Currently the most economically priced brand new car on sale in the UK, add in low running costs and cheeky up-and at-’em handling and this Alto is a must have for budget buyers.

The Alto has its own way of handling the demands of town and city, namely its nippy, agile and responsive1.0 Litre petrol engine.

Supremely fuel-efficient and clean, its CO2 figures are just 103 g/kg making it one of the most eco-friendly cars on the market. While the low fuel consumption can give you up to an incredible 74.3 miles per gallon.

It’s much more sophisticated these days thanks to the addition of Dual VVT variable value timing; the 3-cylinder unit musters 67bhp and 90Nmmaximum torque at 4,800rpm.

In a car that tips the scales at 855kg, it’s enough to cover the 0-60mph sprint in 14 seconds and stop again pretty promptly thanks to ABS as standard.

Stick at it and a top speed of 96mph is also attainable. Worth mentioning too that an optional four-speed fully automatic transmission is available, a relatively unusual proposition in this segment.

The Alto is 3500mm long with a 2,360mm wheelbase and that helps it achieve a super-tight turning radius of 4.5m that should be ideal for manoeuvring into tight parking spaces or executing the odd cheeky U-turn.

The Alto’s 1.0-litre petrol engine looks ideal for a compact urban vehicle - It was once enough for a city car to be small and efficient.

If it looked like a shrunken Transit van and had a wow-factor equivalent to a bag of potatoes, nobody much cared.

Today, as small cars become a more mainstream choice for urban motorists, there’s a demand for them to display a lot more individuality and style.

With the Alto, Suzuki has risen to this challenge creating a look that exudes urban energy.

With its huge teardrop headlights, oversize grille and sharply rising belt line, the car is definitely distinctive.

For the latest model year, there’s a palette of smarter colours and upgraded wheel trims. We’re told that the space for front seat occupants is ‘prioritised’ in the cabin but there is still plenty of room available for those in the back although the fact is that most city cars are used to carry more than two people rarely, if ever, and so long as the rear seats can cope with a few shopping bags and a tattered road atlas, they’ll do the job.

The relaxed urban feel continues inside with an interior that’s both spacious and light with clever storage solutions and a fold down rear seat expanding the luggage capacity from an already impressive 129l.

In other words, compact yes, pokey no. The controls are chunky and simple to operate in the best Suzuki traditions and the stereo is well designed with nicer finishes than you’ll encounter elsewhere.
