A Home Office report revealed the total for 2014/15 was 26 per cent lower than the previous year. Crime figures were up by eight per cent over the same period.

Chief Inspector Steve Curry said: “The report does not show the total number of arrests for all offences made in Sussex during that time.

“We have also seen a dramatic decrease in the number of people detained under the Mental Health Act and taken into police cells.

“We have also had a significant increase in people reporting sexual offences and domestic abuse, and we are actively seeking people to report these offences to us, which may reflect the rise in crime statistics.”

He added: “The figures are a little bit misleading in the way they are presented.

“The reason there appears to be such a difference between the fall in arrests between 2014/15 and previous years is because we now include offences which were not previously requested by the Home Office.

“There is no doubt we are still making a significant number of arrests; the key thing is we are arresting people where appropriate.”
