KAYAKERS paddling off the Eastbourne coastline on Saturday afternoon suddenly found themselves all at sea when a sharp sea fog descended close inshore, shrouding the area in thick mist.
Coastguard officers reacted swifly as visibility was reduced to just a few metres leaving the kayakers quickly disorientated in the gloom.
They called in the Eastbourne all-weather lifeboat to help the stranded kayakers just off the pier where they were herded to safety.
Earlier in the day, the inshore lifeboat was launched to assist Coastguard cliff rescue officers with the recovery of a casualty from the foot of Beachy Head.
At 5.30pm yesterday (Sunday) the inshore lifeboat was again launched, this time following a report from a member of the public to another kayaker in difficulties off Cooden Beach. However, the kayaker had made his own way to shore, despite the gloom of the persistent sea fret.
