The new hair and beauty salon, Streets Ahead, at St Wilfrid’s Hospice, has become a victim of its own success.
Patients, family members and other visitors to the hospice are invited to use the salon’s services for a suggested donation and it has proved so popular, the hospice needs more help to run it.
Mandy Hendry, from the salon, said, “Proceeds from the salon go straight to providing hospice care, so people are often happy to give more than the suggested donation.
“We’re now finding people want to make bookings, but we have too few volunteers to fulfil them.”
Marjorie, a patient who attends the hospice’s Wellbeing Centre, is a regular visitor to the salon and enjoys being pampered.
Lisa, a volunteer stylist, said, “I love it here. I’d definitely recommend volunteering to anyone.
“The hospice is such a special place with the loveliest atmosphere.”
Mandy says that help is required from qualified stylists or beauticians.
She said, “As little as a couple of hours a week will help so much.
“Please get in touch if you would like to volunteer in the salon.”
St Wilfrid’s supports 1,000 patients a year. All care is free of charge.

If you’d like to make an appointment at the salon call Mandy on 01323 434258.
And if you do come to the salon, why not stay on for lunch or a piece of homemade cake in the hospice’s café, which is open to everyone.
The hospice is also in need of volunteers at its Donation Centre and Furniture Store on Moy Avenue – near ESK.
