Sport England raises questions over school site

Sport England has objected to plans to build a primary school on the Cavendish site but is working with the school to find a ‘mutually acceptable outcome’.

The public body, which aims to encourage sport across the country, says it supports the plan for a primary school but has lodged a holding objection because the proposed school would lead to the loss of a playing field.

Whether to grant permission for the new two form entry school and 38 place nursery will be decided by East Sussex County Council’s planning committee.

A letter from Sport England was posted on the council’s planning website.

It said, “If the applicant can demonstrate that the benefit of new sports provision would clearly outweigh the loss and demonstrate there will be no harm to sport and recreation provision then Sport England would be minded to support the proposal.”

In the letter, they add, “At this stage Sport England submits a holding objection because it is not considered to demonstrate the benefits to sport outweigh the loss of the playing field.”

Kenny Fitzpatrick, head at Cavendish School, said, “Cavendish School would like to clarify that the letter to the planning department of October 29 from Sport England was not an objection to the provision of a new primary school.

“The issues raised surround the shared usage of facilities to be provided and we do acknowledge that Sport England have a statutory responsibility to comment on applications involving school playing fields.

“We have liaised with Sport England throughout the design process and whilst they have requested clarification with regards to the detailed planning application, the design team continues to work with them to find a mutually acceptable outcome.”

Meanwhile, information events for prospective parents have been planned for the coming weeks.
