Shopping centre roof work to start in April

Repair work to the roof of Langney Shopping Centre is scheduled to start at the beginning of April.

The news has come from Langney Councillor Alan Shuttleworth, who last week called for the owners of the shopping centre to be more transparent.

This week, he said, “I have been informed the work on the main section of the roof will also start in April and that there is a possibility that some shopping units may be open for business sometime during April.”

This work will involve the installation of new brackets below the ends of each beam. The work is scheduled to start on April 1.

Despite the news, Cllr Shuttleworth is still criticising the rate of progress and says information is ‘dripping out’ without a clear timetable for works.

He is also calling for an explanation of the reasons why the roof collapsed and a target date for re-opening the centre with a clean safety certificate.

Cllr Shuttleworth said, “The public are still waiting to hear the reason that the roof collapsed. Shopping centre roofs do not just fall in due to heavy rainfall.

“We need to hear a full explanation for what happened, and this must involve a clear analysis of any issues with the design structure of the roof.”

The Dangerous Structures Notice will have to be lifted, the building works carried out, and the building declared safe before trading can resume.

Last week, the Herald revealed Langney Shopping Centre traders had received rent bills for the time the centre was closed.

This week, Eastbourne MP Stephen Lloyd has reacted to the news.

Mr Lloyd said, “It is outrageous that traders have been charged rent during this period when they have no income and they are unable to operate their businesses.

“The owners should be working much more closely with the traders, and ought to have offered more support to these small businesses during this period of hardship.”

Mr Lloyd has written to the directors of London & Associated Properties, the owners, to demand a comprehensive report on all these matters.
