A FAVOURITE haunt for walkers on the Downs has lost its shepherd and its goats are also set to go.
Staff from the National Nature Reserve will be at Winchester’s Pond to explain changes to walkers who tramp around Lullington Heath National Nature Reserve. The goats, who were let loose on the site to hunt out weeds, are taking an extended holiday to Somerset and a rare breed of white cow will move in to keep the area trim.
The site’s shepherd took voluntary redundancy in the face of funding cuts.
Senior reserves manager Malcolm Emery and his staff will be in a white marquee close to the main track to answer walkers’ questions. They will be there from 10am onwards on Sunday and Monday.
