A picture of football fans believed to be Russian supporters displaying a flag from Eastbourne has appeared on social media.
The photograph was posted by the Guardian newspaper’s Moscow correspondent Shaun Walker and shows a child and two adults carrying a flag with Eastbourne emblazoned on it along with the names Aiden and Edan and a Brighton and Hove Albion badge.
It emerges the flag belonged to Edan Shelley and Aiden Willis who left their bag with the flag inside when fighting broke out in the centre of Marseille between England and Russia supporters at the weekend.
Speaking to the Herald this afternoon, Edan said he, Aiden and another friend Elliott had left the southern French city after there were violent exchanges between English and Russian fans.
“It was horrible, absolutely disgusting,” he said.
“There were about 50-60 Russians who charged at the English fans when we were sitting in a square.
“We realised we needed to get out quickly and I left the bag with the flags in there.”
Aiden has since returned home but Edan and Elliott are currently on their way to Lens for the England v Wales game on Thursday afternoon.
